MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough Cojiticil "was held last evening in the Borough Council Chambers, . and was attended by Crs Feist (chairman), E. McEwen, J. C. Ewington, W. Morris, F. W. Temple, J. Elliott and E. G. Eton. Apologies for absence were received from Crs Pauling and Hoar. A letter was received from -the Secretary of the Wairarapa Employers' Association (Mr. S. E. Wright) stating that at a meeting of the Holidays Committee, on Monday last, it was resolved that.it be a recommendation that Wednesday, February 21st, should be declared a holiday as from 12 o'clock noon, in place of Thursday, February 22nd, for the second day bf the Masterton' A. and P. Association's Show on condition that the change be advertised fourteen days in advance. The recommendation .was adoptbd. Mr Chas. B. Buxton forwarded a plan showing the proposed streets to be put through Wrigley's Estate. He considered that it ipight be possible for him to open a street along the land occupied by Ml'Hugh«Beetham and to connect-with the same point as the south end of the proposed road marked as "Miro Street," which road he should then ask the Council to accept instead of that now marked, on the plan as connecting with Pine \ Street. ' A plan \vo#ld be submitted later showing a proposed further subdivision of the balance of the land. It was resolved not to'accept the plan until the sections are shown thereon. Mr D. Elliot, manager of the abattoir, reported as follows in connection with the quantity of water being yielded per day by the ' well at the abattoir:—"The race water has be.en cut oft' for two days and a-half, and the depth of the water in the well has been taken at various times, and I estimate that the daily yield is about 600 gallons. This quantity would be sufficient for the purpose of washing carcases. I may mention that a considerable sum has been | expended on .the pump, and well since 1 the opening of the abattoir about eight months ago, and on Sunday last great difficulty was experienced in getting the former to draw water owing, I believe, to defective joints in the pipe admitting air." Cr Mtfrris moved, and Cr Elliott seconded, that "the Veterinary Department should be written to, and the'whole matter placed before them, pointing out that the Water supply is not a .success, and if the Department will advance the money the Council will carry out the work." The motion was carried. In his monthly report the Borough Engineer . stated, inter alia: —ln regard to the extension of Pownall Street through Ngainatawa block, he found that the line of road recently approved of in this block was being constructed with an angle in it in place of being in one line. As considerable trouble has been taken to obtain a regular and continuous route from Renall Street to Villa Street, and as it was virtually decided on January 18th that only two angles should exist, viz., one at Cole Street and one at the Ngamatawa block, he was surprised now to find that a third j angle, which could easily be avoided, should have been introduced. He had prepared a plan of the said road, showing the line adopted and how the angle mentioned could be eliminated and-the road thereby improved. He again brought under the Council's notice the necessity of acquiring a site on which to erect stables and implement sheds. During the past few weeks no less than 80 or 90 culverts had been supplied to private owners. The work entailed considerable time and expehse on the ordinary road staff. ! It was decided that the Trustees of tHe Estate be requested to eliminate the angle in the road referred to by the Engineer. The question of corporation yards was referred to a committee consisting of Crs Ewwgton, Temple and Morris.
