The rates outstanding amount to £327 15s lOd. j Statistics just published show that last year the. excess of births over deaths per 10,000 of the population was 19 in France,' compared with 100 in Great Britain and 148 m Germany. The trade of Canada for the four months of the current fiscal year, shows an aggregate of £20,200,000, an increase of £6,050,000 as compared with the same period- last year. Two cases of scarlet fever in Kuripuni Street were Reported to the meeting of the Masterton ' Borough Council, last evening, by ■ Dr Cook. A case of scarlet fever in Victoria Street was, also, reported to the Council by Dr A. Hosking. During- the next few weeks, if present arrangements are adhered to, close on 40,000 sheep, mostly breeding ewes, will leave.Hawke's Bay for the Waikato. The Hastings drovers have all received engagements, and several mobs are on the road now. The new Japanese training scheme is now stated to be designed to increase the already enormous Japanese army by 150,000 men, which increase is to be held in reserve ready for active service. While this is being done by'a neighbouring Pacific Power, alien in race, religion, civilisation, politics and social conception, we in New Zealand have not even sufficient modern rifles to arm the few men we have trained and have not effectively fortified a single port. Miss L. Powdrell has intimatedjier intention of offering a trophy of the I value of two guineas to be competed tor at the next tournament held under the auspices of the Masterton Lawn Tennis Club. The third match between the New South Wales and Auckland bowlers, four rinks aside, was won by Auckland by 39 points, the totals being 89 to 50. Auckland thus won two of the three games. At a special meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, last evening, presided over by Cr Feist, /it-was resolved that Thursday afternoon should be the statutoiy half holiday in the Borough of Masterton for the ensuing year. The fortnightly meeting of the Good Templars' Lodge Endeavour was held in the Y.M.C.A. rooms last night, when there was a good muster of members. Routine business having been transacted, the election of officers was proceeded with, and resulted as follows: —C.T., Bro. Morris; V.C.T., Bro. Brassel; Secretary, Bro. King: Financial Secretary, Bro. Braggins; Marshal, Bro. Tarr; Chaplain, Bro. Anderson; Guard, Bro. Billington. The installation will be proceeded with at next meeting. The Lodge was cleared in the usual manner. At the Wairarapa Tennis Cham- . pionship Meeting, just concluded on the Masterton Courts, Mr C. C. Cox was a very successful competitor, winning no less than four events, viz., the Championship Singles, Championship Combined with Miss Powdrell, the Handicap Doubles with Mr W. Pearse, and the Handicap Combined with Miss Powdrell. Miss Powdrell, also, played brilliantly, and succeeded in annexing the Ladies' Championship Singles, the Combined Championship Doubles, and the Handicap Doubles with Mr Cox as already stated, the Ladies' Handicap Singles, and the Ladies' Handicap Doubles with Miss M. H. Payton. - A passenger by the Riverina was robbed of 32 sovereigns at Dunedin on Saturday night, says a Dunedin paper. When in Wellington he met a man who represented himself as a gold miner. The two proceeded to the West Coast and went to Dunedin on the way to the new rush in Victoria. On Saturday night they went for a walk, and while they were seated in a dark corner the companion whistled, and two men came up and nearly choked the victim, who was knocked down. While the was insensible the money was taken from him. The police arrested the passenger's friend and another man. Even from Iceland a letter has come to Mr T. E. Donne enquiring about the pastoral and industrial conditions in New Zealand. The writer is a Britisher who has evidently grown tired of the frozen north. From another unusual quarter a letter has been received. A New Zealander, who has made his home on the west coast of Sumatra, requests information about the cost of, travel, routes and so on, from that country to New Zealand. He suggests that by "judicious advertising Dutchmen settled in the East Indies would be induced to pass their furlough in New Zealand." A man domiciled in Rangoon, Burmah, also desires information about this colony. A meeting of ■ the Ground Committee of the "Masterton A. and P. Association was held, yesterday afiernoon, there being present— Messrs D. McGregor, junr. (chairman), T. P. Lett, W. McKenzie and W.' Perry. With regard to the' proposed alterations to the grandstand, the committee decided to postpone ,the alterations until after the approaching show. It was resolved to ask for, prices for the erection of extra'produce sheds from builders who are members of the Association, as more space has already ' been applied for in connection, with,.; the comingshow than is available. The Secretary was instructed to'obtain particulars for connecting - the Showgrounds with the telephone system, and submit them to ;the next meeting of the committee. \ The death occurred at Cashpoint, at an early hour yesterday morning, of Miss Victoria Howell, sister of Mr R. E. Howell, auctioneer, of Masterton. About a month ago Miss Howell was seized with an attack of influenza, and she went to the seaside to recuperate. There an internal complaint set in, and brought on her death. The deceased was a native of River ton, Southland, and came to the Wairarapa about three and a half years ago. She wap the second daughter of Captain Howell, of Fairlight Station, Lake Wakatipu. Up till December last she had conducted a private hospital in Cornwall Street, in conjunction with Miss Hall. The funeral will leave the • residence of Miss Hall, Cornwall Street, to- ' morrow (Friday), at 10.30 a.m., for the Masterton Cemetery. Mr W. P. James, S.M., heard a case at the Masterton Magistrate's Court, yesterday morning, in which a young I woman was charged with having travelled on 11 a railway train while suffering from an infectious disease, namely scarlet fever, without having previously notified the guard, and, also, iwith having 'appeared in a public place while suffering from the' same complaint. Mr B. J. Dolan, who appeared for the Railway Department, did not press for a heavy penalty, but wished the Magistrate to impress upon the accused the seriousness of the offence. The Magis- , trate severely admonished the accused, and .imposed a nominal fine of ss, "with 16s costs. The charge of 'assault preferred by Mary Green against Percy Kirkby was struck out, owing to the non-appear-ance' of the plaintiff. Mr B. J. Dolan appeared for the prosecution, and Mr C. A. Pownall for the defendant.
At the Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Championship Meeting, just con eluded, on the Masterton Tennis Club's courts, great satisfaction was expressed by the visiting players on the excellent manner in which the Club's groundsman, Mr Frank Treader, had performed the work of preparing the grounds for the tournament. The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Municipal Fire Brigade was held, last night, in the Central Station, Captain Jenkins presiding. One month's leave of absence was granted to Fireman Hounslow. Correspondence was received from the Dannevirke Fire Brigade in reference to accommodation for competing teams at Christchurch at the approaching Fire Brigades Contest. The Masterton Band forwarded the prize-money won at the recent sports by members of the Fire Brigade. Mr E. Arnold, of ' Wellington, donated a cheque of £1 Is; for assistance rendered to his son on the occasion of his recent accident in Mastarton. The resignation of Fireman Mercer was accepted with regret. The Secretary reported that Branchman Warner and Foremen Gardner and Berry - were entitled, respectively, to a long service medal and an extra service bar. Mr H. Scales was v elected an active member, and Mr P. Hider an honorary member. The meeting was then adjourned until Tuesday evening next. Private board and residence is advertised for by a single gentleman. An advertiser wishes to rent two furnished bedrooms, with the use of kitchen. The attention of those who suffer from indigestion is drawn by advertisement to the effective quality of Pearson's Pepto-chlor. Mr H. t A. Whelch, draper, Queen Street, announces elsewhere that, his summer sale will commence to-mor-row (Friday). The reduced prices of goods can be seen in the shop window to-day. The attention of members of the Y.M.C.A. is drawn to the advertisement that appears in another column calling a special general meeting for the purpose of altering one of the rules; of the Association. At the Masterton Auction Mart, on Saturday, Mr J. R. Nicol will hold a special sale of furniture, including all the leading lines. In order to clear up consignments, everything will be sold without reserve.
