RIFLE SHOOTING.

OPAKI v. KARORI. ;The annual match beween the Opaki and Karori Rifle Clubs took ../place on the Opaki Range, yesterday. ■ The conditions were seven shots at 200 yards, 500 yards and 600 yards . ranges. The teams were composed of ten men. The weather was bright with a strong rear fish-tail wind. Notwithstanding this some very creditable scores were made. Luncheon and afternoon tea was provided ■ by the ladies. Three targets were used, and an early start was made in the morning, the first shot being fired just before 9 o'clock. The shooting continued without interruption. The final shot was fired just before 3 o'clock, thus enabling the visitors to return to Wellington by the 3.30 o'clock train. Captain Welch, of the Opaki Club, called for three cheers for the Karori team, which were heartily given. Mr H. Marshall, on behalf of the Karori team, in a neat speech, thanked Captain Welch and the Opaki Club for the splendid manner in which they had received. and entertained the Karori team. Hearty cheers were then given for the Opaki Club, Captain Welch and the ladies. W. Tarr (97) and H. both of the Karori team, made the highest scores during the day. G. Halliday, of the same team, a pro- * minent shot and competitor at many New Zealand meetings, made his "maiden possible" by scoring seven ' consecutive bullseyes at 200 yards. W. Winslade and J. Turnbull were ■ the principal scorers for the Opaki team, each making 94. The Opaki team, although not showing so much brilliancy as the Karori team, made a much better average and won the match by the substantial margin of 43 points.
