WELLINGTON RACES. ACHILLES WINS THE CUP. By Telegraph —Press Association. . WELLINGTON, January 22. There was fine weather for the first day of the summer meeting and a large attendance, estimated at 9,000. The sum of £2s,2ss(including £2,311 through the double totalisator) was handled for the day, as against £23,729 for the first day of last year. This is a record for one day at the Wellington races. The , double machine on the Cup and Tele- i graph Handicap, paid'a dividend of £7 18s. Results:— ( Trentham Hack Hurdles.—Lavinia 1, Lull 2, Maui 3. Also started— Pawa. Lull was favourite. Lavinia led all the way, and won in a canter. Time, Smin 21sec. Dividend, £6 18s. Anniversary Handicap.—Blythe- . maid 1, Exmoor 2, Royal Blue 3. Also started—Grand Slam, Wirral, Riflemaid, Aeolus, De Witte, Arc Light and After Dulcinea had delayed the start through fractiousness she was practically left at the post. Blythemaid and De Witte led to the turn of the * straight, when u the former drew out, and won easily by four lengths. Time, lmin 42 2-5 . sec. Dividends, £8 and £3 7s. Achilles was the favourite> and was first away, and with Eden led~tq of the turn, when Zimmerman challenged the leaders, but soon fell out of the struggle. Then Apa came on the inside, but Achilles never left the race in doubt, and won comfortably by a length. Eden was a length and a-half behind Apa. Time, 2min 35sec. Dividends, £2 2s and £2 2s. Telegraph Handicap.—Munjeet 1, Probable d, Signalman 3. Also started—King Billy, Pink'-un, Delamere, Sir Tristram and Fontenoy. Munjeet was a hot favourite, and got a "break on" at the start, and never gave anything a chance, winning by ■ a length and a-half. Time, lmin 15sec. Dividends, £1 18s and £2 7s. Tongariro Hack Handicap. —Chatterer 1, Devonia 2„ Silken Rein 3. Also started—Compass, Southern Cross, Flower Girl, Merrie Rose, Kaiuku, Merriwai, Sandix and Sipylus (late Fascination). At the finish Merriwing came fast, and won a good ■ xace by a, bare half length. Time, lmin 18 3-ssec. Dividends, £4 8s and £ll 7s. Maiden Hack Hurdles.—Maidi 1, Iseult 2, Domain 3. Scratched — < Colyton. Pat and , Awapuna fell at the fence in front of the stand. The winner led over the last five furlongs, and won very comfortaably. Time, -Bmin 0 3-ssec. Dividends, £2 Is and 15s. FOXTON CUP. Montigo ... 1 Nova ... 2 : Makikihi ... 3 ■ ' Scratched—Rookby, Roseal. Entering the straight Nova looked a certain winner. Montigo, however, ■ came very 'fast, and won on the post by a neck. Time, 2min 14sec. Dividends, £4 6s and £1 6s. Trial Hack Handicap.—Flingot 1, Lingerer 2, Robinlink 3. Hack Hurdles.—Peruvian 1, Sen ■Sim 2, Restward 3. Scratched— Cassiopea, Iseult. This race resolved , itself into a duel between the first and second horses. After racing abreast up to three furlongs from home, Peruvian drew away, and eventually won comfortably by a length. Time, 2min 56 3-ssec. Diyi--1 end, £4 Is.' Flying Handicap.—St. Claimer 1, Kitchenmaid 2, Marseillaise 3. Scratched—Chartreuse. St. Claimer led with Kitchenmaid for the first four furlongs. The former then drew away and won comfortably by a length. Time, lmin 8 3-ssec. Dividend, £2 9s. Hack Welter Handicap, 1 mile. — Millenial 1, Arcadia 2, The Dane 3. Also started—Sen Sim, Tangeroa, . ..Soultite, Rah'ui. This proved the best of "good things" for Millenial, ■ Who, went out on her own and won very comfortably pulling up. Time, lmin 49 3-ssec. Dividends, £6 8s , and £7 13s. Herrington Welter, 7 furlongs.— Eookby 1, Rosegrove 2, Ladylike 3. .Also started—Assayer, Joe Chamberlain, Chartreuse. In a slashing finish Rookby won by a short neck.
