COMMERCIAL.

Messrs Dalgety and Co. Ltd., report on their Eketahuna sale held on Friday, 18th inst. as follows:—All sheep that were entered came forward, but cattle in numbers were short as we sold 90 steers privately that were entered. Bidding for both cattle and sheep were brisk. We quote :-~Two-tooth ewes 16s, 2-tooth wethers 14s to 14s sd, breeding ewes to 14s 4d, lambs in wool to 9s 3d, shorn lambs, small, 7s 6d, culls 5s 4d to 5s 9d. Cattle: Two-year to £3 ss, small yearlings £1 Is, 18month steers £2 lis, small yearling heifers 295. We also held our Alfredton sale on Thursday, 17th inst. Very few sheep came forward, owing to the flooded state of the .creeks, but there were some good 3year bullocks. Owners' reserves were too high for would-be purchasers. We quote:—Two-tooth wethers to 14s Bd, 18-month steers to £2 13s 6d.

LONDON MARKETS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Received January 21, 7.40 a.m. LONDON, January 20. ' North Island mutton is quoted at 4£d, best 4fd; River Plate, heavy 3fd, light 3§d. Beef: Forequarters 3d, rest unchanged. The following were the average prices realised for the fleece portions of the clips named:—Ngatapua, 12£ d; R.S. over T: 12|d; Tehamoe, 14£ d; Rangitata, 14Jd; W. D., 14id. The quantity catalogued to date is 51,437 bales; sold, 49,336 bales.

HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. WELLINGTON, January 21. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, 19th instant:—"The mutton market is quiet and prices are lower. Supplies Ifrom Canterbury, however, do not meet the requirements, and quotations are nominal/ The average price for light weight North Island mutton 4£d, and.heavy weights 4Jdj per lb. The lamb market is dull. A small shipment of this season's New Zealand lamb has arrived, and is realising full values from 5Jd to 6£d per lb. Australian lamb is in large supply at 4Ad per lb. The beef market is weak. New Zeaand hindquartei-s are quoted at 3|d and forequarters 3£d per lb. The butter market is weak, but the demand still continues. ' Choice New Zealand is quoted at 106s, Australian 100s, and Danish 114s per cwt. The cheese market is firm. New Zealand makes are quoted at 63s percwt. There is a better demand for hemp. The market is firm with an upward tendency. Good ftir grade, on the spot, is quoted at £39 and the Januavy-March shipments at £3B 10s penton. There has been no alteration in the cocksfoot seed market since last week. The woolmarket is active, and prices are firm. Quotations, for New Zealand wheat are nominal. : The oat market is quiet but firm. 'The price of New Zealand oats is .unchanged."
