TURF NOTES, (By Zetland). THE WELLINGTON MEETING. The executive of the Wellington Racing Club is leaving nothing undone that will conduce to the success of the Cup meeting this week The Club firmly believes in maintaining the popularity of its meetings, and to this end has issued invitations to thousands of sporting people in different parts of the colony to assemble at Trentham this week. This liberality on the part of the Metropolitan Club brings its own reward, and should result in a record meeting. Up to a week ago the tracks were naturally in a hard state, but the recent rains, have altered things' for the better, and during the past few mornings really good work has been executed by the large number of contestants that have been brought to the scene of action. Considerable interest has of late been evinced in the Cup and Telegraph Handicap, for which there are eleven and ten acceptances, respectively. Achilles (9.4) has been doing most satisfactory work at Trentham, and is now a firm favourite for the big event. Submarine (8.0) is said to be at his best. St. Joe and Mystification at 7.8 are both well, the latter having thrown off some of the soreness that troubled him at Manawatu. Mr G. G. Stead's Eden (6.7) has been strongly, supported to win. Zimmerman, Polyanthus, Bourrasque, Apa and Ellerton, will make up the field. The race is admittedly a very open one, and the contest should be well worth witnessing. Munjeet (9.4) is a firm favourite for the Telegraph Handicap, but among those that should prove capable of making the Stepniak mare gallop are King .Billy (8.13), Pink-'un (8.8) and Sir Tristram (7.10). The hack events have filled ' exceptionally well with 24 and 13 acceptances, and these promise to be a feature of the y meeting. Taken altogether the fix-' ture should be the best yet held by the Wellington Racing Club. The following are suggested as likely to be most prominent in the settlement, of their respective engagements:— v Hack Hurdles.—Pawa and Maui. Anniversary Handicap.—Riflemaid and Grand Slam. Ruapehu Hack.—Golden Cairn and Tupono. Wellington % Cup.— Achilles, Submarine, Mystification. Telegraph Handicap. Munjeet, Pink-'un, King Billy. Tongariro Hack.—Merrie Rose and Silken Rein. Nursery Handicap.—Finery and Pearl Reef. Electric Handicap.—Golden Gate and Replete. . *
