A LEGAL POINT.
The Wellington Hospital Trustees some time ago acquired certain land which fronts Revans;Street, Wellington, and is contiguous to the hospital grounds. It is no secret, says the Times, that the Trustees intend to lease the Revans Street land for revenue purposes; and it seems to be clear that while land used for hospital purposes is legally exempt from rating, land teased as an, aid to a hospital's revenue may be rated. If the Revans Street sections were leased, the Hospital Trustees would not object to the City Council rating them; but they are riot yet leased, and the Trustees, on Tuesday decided to consult their solicitor with awiew to resisting a demand made by the City Council for rates/ The Trustees do not think the Council is entitled to judge, at the present stage; how far the land is being "used for hospital purposes," and they do not see why they should be rated as long as they continue to be occupiers.
