The Royal Insurance Company has purchased the business of the Northern Accident Insurance Company of i Glasgow, London, and is applying to the Imperial Parliament for amendment of the original deed of settlement to permit of this class of business being carried on. At the meeting of the Association for the Advancement of Science, a resolution was passed expressing satisfaction at the completion of the magnetic survey of the main island of New Zealand, and also of the effort made to extend the survey to outlying islands. Hope is expressed that the Government of New Zealand may see its way to include the Macquarie Islands. ! MELBOURNE BUILDING STRIKE. Received January 11, 10.18 a.m. MELBOURNE, January 11. The building strike has ended. The men will resume work this morning, and a conference between masters and men will shortly be held to settle points in dispute. Work estimated at £200,000 was at a standstill through the strike, while it is estimated that the men lost £36,000 in wages. The union paid about £IO,OOO strike pay. SECTARIANISM AND POLITICS. Reid, in a speech, regretted the introduction of sectarianism into politics, and blamed the Roman Catholic Church for being the instigator of the change. Sailed, at one o'clock—Rimutaka, for Wellington. FIRE ON A STEAMER. Received January 12, 12.25 a.m. SYDNEY, ianuary 11. On Wednesday evening a fire was discovered in No. 5 hold on board the Manuka. The stewardess noticed the heat coming from a ventilator, and a fire was "found in a shipment of flax. Water was poured into the hold till the cargo was covered, and by six o'clock on Thursday morning the fire was extinguished. The water found its way into the mail room, and wet the mails and passengers' luggage. No alarm was felt on board. THE LATE PROFESSOR RAINY. Received Januaiy 11, 9.11 a.m. MELBOURNE, January 11. The remains of the late Professor Rainy will be finally interred at Edinburgh early in March.
