MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING,

The monthly meeting of the Masterton County Council was held yesterday afternoon. There were present—Crs C. E. Cockburn-Hood (chairman), W. J. Welch, W. Harris, J. Morris, junr., H. Toogood, D. Guild, C. Kebbell, and A. Murray. Mr Murray, who was recently elected as a representative of the Alfredton riding, was welcomed to the Council table by the Chairman. Messrs J. Boustead. C. E. Gill and I. Poll wrote stating that the class of bridge they required over the Ihuraua River was a suspension bridge, in preference to a truss bridge. The estimated cost of the former was £685. After discussion it was decided, on the motion of Cr Kebbell, seconded by Cr Murray, to give effect to the request of the settlers. The Clerk was authorised to,obtain the consent of the ratepayers interested preparatory to raising a loan of £450 for the erection of the bridge. Messrs H. and C. Lett wrote asking the Council to approve of the X' scheme of subdivision and roading of their section at Lansdowne. Crs Welch, Harris and the Engineer were appointed a committee to report on the matter at the next meeting. Mr J. B. Green, Waterfalls, wrote stating that the bridge beyond Waterfalls required attention; also drawing the Council's attention to the state of Burling's cutting. The matter was referred to the Engineer. It was decided to take the necessary steps to spend the £l5O grant for metalling the Rakaunui Road. Cr Welch drew attention to the number of cattle and horses that were straying on the County roads near the Borough. It was resolved to ask the Ranger to keep a sharp look-out for • straying stock. The Engineer was instructed to have the Blairlogie and Waihora Bridges painted. .It was decided to write to the owners of the tram line running parallel to the Weraiti Road asking them to remove it. After discussion, the Council decided to bear £l3O of the cost of opening up and fencing Colombo Road, the Te Whiti Riding to pay the balance of the cost, about £3O.
