THE EXHIBITION.
PAINS' FIREWORKS DISPLAY. THE ORGAN RECITAL. By Telegraph —Special Service. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. &• Over 18,000 people visited the Exhibition, yesterday, of whom it is computed more than 10,000 were present at the display of fireworks in the evening. Special trains from the country brought crowds of visitors to see this spectacle, which, for variety, brilliance and novelty, won the admiration of all. Startling lightning effects were reproduced with wonderful fidelity. Rockets of different designs delighted the vast assemblage, and the set pieces, including a clever representation of the Niagara Falls and a cyclist endeavouring to loop a blazing loop, were as beautiful as they were novel. Excellent portraits of the King and Queen were shown in coloured fire, and in the later displays portraits of New Zealand's prominent public men will be similarly displayed. The organrecital given by Mr Massey, organist, of the Bathurst Cathedral, last night, proved a most enjoyable performance. Mr Massey's technique and "j/nYaslng are brilliant, and he exhibits fine appreciation of harmony and insight into the more subtle shadings of tone. The programme was of a fairly light character, and was listened to by on audience of over 600 people. Me Massey's. second organ recital, was; given very successfully this afternoon, before a;, large attendance. The Carnation, and Sweet Pea Show will be held at, the Exhibition, to-morrow and. Thursday.. An elaborate display of these popular flowers is expected.. "-Wonderland's" Floral Fete, oni January 17th, promises to be a very special function. Valuable prizes are offered for the best floral designs, floral. ■ costumes, and decorated bicycles.. A sensational act will be performedi representing the destruction by fireof a seventeen-storey building, 150 ft high, and the rescue of a. woman from a falling roof.. Forty-three answers were received from, all parts of the colony to- the advertisement for a "Plucky, pretty girl, about twenty years of age, and fairlylight weight; must have good' nerves," to play the part of the rescued lady in this act. Mr White, representative of Pain and Sons, London, commenced, this morning, the work of illuminating the ExhibitionSports Ground for the Besses-o'-th'-Barn season. Some three thousand, coloured lamps and lanterns will be employed. It is proposed, at a later date, to festoon and light .up the whole of the trees and flower-beds in, front of the This will be a Special feature of the-Exhibition, and will last two. nights. The Besses-o'-th'-Bavn Band's first programme is on Thursday night. The - bubble fountain, has arrived by the Gothic, and will be erected at the rear of the building. Mr Bruce, Mayor of Adelaide, whohas spent three or four days at the
Exhibition, states that he is very pleased with all he' has seen. He is very much charmed the British; Court, particularly with the pictui'es. The Maori pa has proved most interesting, and the' haka and poi dances witnessed this afternoon were equal in eneifgy and aptitude to anything he has seen in the King Country. The view from the Exhibition, tower is one of the most beautiful that could possibly bs imagined.. The side shows are splendidly managed,, and the admission charges very reasonable, while the numerous, denizens of the New Zealand.streams to be seen- in captivity in the Aquarium must make the mouths of anglers water.. Tlie trip in the motor launch on the Avoir is an especially delightful experience in the hot weather now prevailing.
