CHANNEL TUNNEL PROJECT.
Received January 4, 7.30 a.m. LONDON, January 3. The Times declares that nothing short of universal military service on the Continental model can justify the construction of a Channel tunnel.

Lord Wolseley reiterates the danger of invasion if the tunnel is constructed.
(The marked growth of friendly feeling between Britain and France during the last couple of years has caused a revival of the project for linking the two nations by a railway tunnel beneath the Straits. French engineers have lately reported that the scheme was practicable, at a cost of about £10,000,000; and the British Parliament will probably be again asked to sanction the work).
