WAIRARAPA CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

SPORTS AND 00N0KRT.

On Tuesday next (New Year's Day) the Wairarapa Caledonian Society will hold its annual sports gathering on the Maaterton Paik Uval, and if the number of aoceptanaes in tho various events is any criterion, the meeting should prove a huge succese. Included in the numerous events are foot running, oyole races, Highland danoiug Bnd music, and wood-chopping, and as the competitors are from all parts of the colony the contpxt should prove very interesting. The sports are well and favourably known, not only in the Wairarapa, but in other parts of the colony, and there will no doubt be a largo influx of visitors to the gathering. Granted fine weather the Directors of the So 1 oiety confidently expect that this 1 year's maeUng will prove a record in the annals of the Society. The conoert in the Town Hall in the evening gives promise of eclipsing any of the Society's pre vious enterta.nmonts. The programme, which is published in another column, is a carefully prepared one, and is calculated to suit all tastes. Some of the best Known Wellington and local vocal ists will contribute items. Madam a Maiie Groome will be heard in "Doon the Burn, Davie Lad," and "A Guid New Year," and Mr J. F. Carr, a Wellington tenor of repute, in "My Luve is Like the Red, Red Rose," and "The Trumpeter." Miss Lycn Mills will sing "Angus McDonald," a»d "The Sands o' Dee." Mr S. J. Johnston, who is favourably knowu to Masterton audiences, will render "Of a' the Airts the Win' Can Blew" and "Bonny Mary of Argyte." Items will also be contributed by Messrs W. G. Norman, A. Nieol, Gordon Stewart, R. Henry, T. Rodgers, W. Igguideu, and Miss Elkins. lbere will also be Scottish danoing aid music, and the medals won during tbq day will hi presented by Mrs Pauling, wife of the President of the Society at the interval.
