CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING. 1 The monthly meeting of the Council nf the Mastertou Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon. I here were present:— Messrs T. G. Masoft (Chairman), D. Donald, M. Oaaelberg, F. W. Carey, G. C. Sum mere!!, B. J. Dolan, 0. Graham. Apologies.for abseuco were received from Messrs J. D. Oruicka'hank, J. B. Keith and H. C. Kobiußon. Ihe Treasurer reported a credit balance of £l2 18s lid. Mr Oaselherg stated that while in Wellington recently, he had interviuwed the Manager of Railways i Mr Ronayne, on the question of the proeoted improvements at the Masterton railway station. Mr. Konayne had informed him that'it was recognised that the largely increasing traffic at tiio station warranted the extra' expenditure, but as yet no money had been voted for the work. It appeared, said Mr ' Caselberg, that the plans and speoifloations for the work had been nut for about two years, but tbey bad apparently been "pigeon-holed." i On the ration of Mr Sura* inereli, seconded ,by Mr Carey, it was decided to write to Mr A. W". Hogg, M.H.R., asking him'to again the Minister of Railwaysthe "necessity for carrying out the works promised at the MHSterton railway station. It was also decided to asu the Borough and County Councils to oo operate in the matter., Mr Oaroy montioned that with regard to the Masterton telephone system, it was a oommon occurrence to distinctly hear other people talking easiness" matters over the telephone; and be thought that should not be so, as it was of considerable Importance to business /men. He had noticed the defect more particularly in Masterton than any other place. He .moved "that the attention of the Pustmaaterj be drawn to the matter, at the sjjm© time exhonorating the operators and attributing the defects toiitha instruments." Mr Sumcderell seconded the motion, which whs carried.
