BIG FIRE AT HASTINGS.

HASTINGS, December 20.
A fire occurred in Queen Street shortly before two o'clock this [morning, when the following business places were destroyed: —Edmonds (printer), Booth, Macdonald and Co. (implement manufacturers), Lequesne and Cowan (plumbers), James (painter), Paterson and Mossman (agents), Scannell (solicitor), and the large livery stables in course of erection for Satterthwaite and O'Meara. Keath and Styles, the builders, lose £3OO.
The wind dropped after the fire had got a good hold, otherwise the block from the Standard printing office to Tipping's store would have gone. The following are the insurances: —D. Scannell's building, including Paterson and Mossman's office, £6OO, London, Liverpool and Globe Office, effects £IOO, 'New Zealand Office; Paterson and Mossmari's office contents £SO, South British Office; Lequesne and Cowan, building £SO, contents £200; Edmonds, printing plant, £225; G. James, painter's requisites, £100; J. T. Blake, store at rear of building £SO, contents £BO. The building ocupied by Booth, Macdoald and Co-, Edmonds, and James was owned by Mrs A. H. Russell, and was insured for £6OO. It is believed that there was no insurance on Booth, Macdonald and Co.'s stock.- The block destroyed was in brick, and all the new buildings iwill consequently be brick.
