MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
ORDINARY MEETING. At the ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, last evening, Cr E. Feist (Deputy-Mayor) presided. There were also present— Crs E. McEwen, W. Morris, T. G. Hoar, J. C. Ewington, F. W. Temple, J. Elliott, J. H. Pauling, and E. G. Eton. Mr J. B. Keith waited on the Council and asked that Essex Street and that portion of Pownall Street extension which has been completed by the Trustees of the Renall Estate be passed by the Council. He stated that the matter was an urgent one as no titles could be issued until the Council approved of the streets, and not only the Estate but a number of private individuals would be put to great loss and inconvenience if the Council were not prepared to deal with the matter at once. The Renall 'Trustees were prepared to enter into a bond to carry out the remaining road works on the Estate to the satisfaction of the Council. The Engineer stated that there was yet £SO worth of work to be,, carried out in Essex Street. On the motion of Cr Elliott, seconded by Cr McEwen, it was decided that the Trustees of the Renall Estate should deposit the sum of £I,OOO as a guarantee that the work of extending Pownall Street to Villa Street will be completed to the satisfaction of the Borough Engineer, the Council to pay interest at the I rate of 3 per cent, while the money is retained,*and to allow the money to be drawn as it is required for tne contract.
£ Crs Feist and McEwen were authorised to affix the seal of the Borough to the plans of Essex Street when the road is completed to the satisfaction of the Engineer. Messrs Donald and Sons wrote offering to supply pumping apparatus in connection with the water supply at the abattoir. It was decided to reply to Messrs Donald and Sons that their application would be considered if the Council required any pumping apparatus. A letter was received from Mr F. Staples, drawing the Council's attention to the bad lighting of Bannister Street between Colombo Road and Kirton Street. The letter was referred 1 to the Works Committee. Mr W. M. Cole submitted plans for the proposed sub-division of the Wrigley Estate. The matter was referred to a committee consisting of Crs Temple, Pauling, Ewington, and Morris. It was decided that the dog tax for the ensuing.year should be the same as previously, viz., ss. Mr G. Morris was re-appointed collector of the tax. The Mayor and Crs Feist and Morris were appointed to represent the Council on the North Wairarapa Benevolent Society. Crs Pauling, Elliott, Temple, and Ewington were appointed a committee to consider the advisability of the Council securing amounts of money by way of temporary loan. The Engineer was authorised to spend £4O on the Druids' Hall in making a temporary office for his own use, pending the Council considering the question of establishing Municipal Buildings. Accounts amounting to £1,148 16s 6d were passed for payment.
