ALLEGED THEFT.

WELLINGTON, Dec 18. borne surprise was oreated in the city, to-day, by the arrest of Alexander Purvis, Secretary and Treasurer to the Benevolent Trustees, and Manager of the Ohiro Home, on a warrant charging him with theft. Purvis had been regarded by many people as a very capable official. Jn the afternoon he was placed before the Stipendiary Magistrate, charged (1) with having stolen £33 12e, the money of the Benevolent Trust, and (2) with having obtained from the Trust a cheque for £33 12s by means o? falsa pretences. Counsel for the department of the Hoapifial ana Charitable Aid asked for a remand, and that bail should be fixed at a substantial figure. The hearing was adjourned until Friday. Bail was granted in two sureties of £2OO each.
