COUNCIL OF DEFENCE.
By Telegraph-—Pmbs Association. WELLINGTON, Deo. 17. The Council of Defence, u'uder theDefence Act of las', session, will be constituted as follows:—The Minister for Defence, Hon, J: 0. Ward, first miltaiy member, Goner&l A. W. Robsu, C. 8,, and the second military member (not yet named); financial membar, Colons) R. J, Collins; secretary, Colonel W. U. Wetb. The Inspector-General will be Colonel R. H. Davies, CB. * Sir Joseph Ward, at a banquet tendered to the Premier of- Tasmania, tonight, said, there wasnothing on the horizon at present to necessitate any particular activity in regard to defence, but the Government, acting under the authority of Parliament, was now bringing the new systeal of defence into operation. The old plan of having oommandauts sent from Home was being exchanged for an improved system whioh they believed would bB more suited to our own requirments and more acceptable to the people. He was persuaded hims3lt that it would be found superior from many poiuts of view to what thoy had Ju the past.
