PREMIER OF TASMANIA.
ENTERTAINED AT A BANQUET. By Telegraph—Press Assooiatioa. s WELLINGTON, Dcco-nber 17. The Han. J. W. lilvaus, Premier of Tasmania, was entertained by the Mayor of the Lower Ilufct, to-night. Sir Joseph Ward proposed the health oi the visitor. Reulying, - the Hod. Mr Evans expressed appreciation of toe evidence of prosperity he haa seen since bis arrival, in New Zealand. He hoped, after what ne had learned here, to institute a policy iu Tasmania u£ ro-pnrobaaiug acme large estates for closex' settlement, where eleven men owuod nearly half the island. Speaking of the Australian Federation, be said if a- vote w«retaken to-morrow Tasmania would be in favour of secession. For himself he was ocposei <;o s'ocassion, believing Federation would eventually be brought to a successful issue.
