EARTHQUAKES IN THE STATES.

| PORTLAND (MAINE), Oct. 21. I Two earthquakes to-night desj troyed £about 100 ft of a temporary I highway structure whioh crosses the upper harbour. The first shook was I felt at 6 o'clock, and the second at j 7.7. Both shocks; were light, bat were distinctly felt by pedestrians. Accompanying the rumbling was the sound made by tbe cracking of the timbers of the temporary structure. It is feared great damage has been done to the foundation of tbe new highway bridge near-by, for whioh 250,000 dollars was appropriated reaently. • BIDDWFORU (MAINtI), Oot. 21. An earthquake was felt at Biddeford Pool and Wood Island, at the mouth of the baeo river, shortly before 11.30 o'clock to day. It was the strongest and most noticeable of a series of earth tromors whioh have been felt in York County jpioro towns, from Kjttery to this Ififcy, for two days.
