The launohing, at Yokohama, of the battleship Satsuma was attended by a sensations 1 incident. It has transpired that a number of foreigners resident in Yokohama laid wageis of 7 to 3, to the extent of £IOO,OOO, against the launch being successful. Several Japanese workmen were arrested prior to the launah taking place, the supposition being that they, with others, had been bribed to obstruct the ways. The preliminary examination of the prisoners, however, did not show that the betting was connected with an alleged plot.
