CHARGE AGAINST A CONSTABLE.
By Telegraph—PreßS Association. WELLINGTON, November 16. Constable Jeremiah O'Brien, who had been a member of the local police force for about two years, was charged at the S.M. Court, today, with having stolen a sovereign from a man named Bernard Cogblan. Prosecutor's story is that late on the night of October 30th he met two constables, one of whom spoke roughly to him. Coghlan took note of the constable's words, having previously given the -officer his name and address. O'Brien put hia (Gogh ian'sj arms behind bis baak- and rushed him off to the look-up, where be said he would teach him to cheek the At the station O'Brien stiuok him on the jaw, and told him to stand up and be searched. When he protested against the assault, O'Brien hit him again. After being searched he was put in a cell, butSwas soon released. O'Brien took possession of all his belongings, which included two sovereigns, bat only returned him one sovereign. Oo«hlan denied he was drunk on the night stated, and had been refused a bed at a hotel because he was dirty. O'Brien was committed for trial.
