SHOCKING ACCIDENT IN A MINE.
ONE MAN FATALLY INJURED.

WAIHJ, November 14. A shooting accident occurred in the Waihi Mine.
Two miners, named Gray and Boxall, who were engaged in sinking No. 2 shaft below No. 8 level, 850 feet down, wero caught like rats in a trap at the bottom of the shaft, oiving to a winch driven by an airdompressor failing to work at a critical moment.
Tbe men had charged three boles in the bottom of the shaft, lighted the fuses, and then signalled tne man In charge of the winob to haul them up. The bucket was drawn up a few feet, and then dropped back. The men tumbled out. At the same time their lights went out. Tbe men endeavoured to louate the ladder at the side of the shaft, but in tbe darkness, intensified by tbe smoke from the burning fuse, failed to find it. Meanwhile tbe shots exploded, one after the other. The wonder was that tbe men were not killed outright. As it was they were terribly injured, Gray succumbing a few hours later, while bis comrade, Boxall, is in a precarious condition.
