Fears are expressed concerning the safety of the small steamer Centennial, which sailed from Napier three weeks ago with a crew of six on board. A MURDEROUS ASSAULT. THREE WOMEN ATTACKED. Received November 5, 10.14 a.m. MELBOURNE, November 5. A young man named Johnstone hBS been arrested on a charge of committing a murderous assault on three women named Patterson in South Melbourne. Johnstone nad bwen keeping company with the younger woman, and her mother remonstrated with him for insulting behaviour, whereupon, it is alleged, he assaulted all three women with a bar of iron. Mrs Patterson, who is 76 years of age, is nob expected to recover. A HORSE TRAINER KILLED. SHOT RY t AN ARTIST. Received November 5, 10.30 a.m. BRISBANE, November 5. An artist named De Silva fired four shots from a revolvjr at Young, a horse trainer, killing him. It is alleged that Young made some insulting remark, which provoked De Silva.

So far in the elections the electors have emphatically shown their determination to insist on an extension of the Legislative Council franchise on the lines iudioated by the Frioe Government. In some districts the reformers are winning by a thousand votes. The indications at the present stage of incomplete returns are"in favour of a complete Liheial and Labour victory. Tfie Government had an overwhelming majority in the metropolitan area. The return of all the Ministers is assured.
