DEATH IN A GAOL.
INQUEST ON AN EX-POLICE-MAN. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, November 2. At the inquest on the body of Alexander Crawford an ex-police-man, who was arrested I'oi drunkenness, on Tuesday, and died in the Mr. Eden Gaol, the evidenoe showed that Crawford was found in a state of hopeless intoxication, and was committed for medical treatment. The gaoler (Severn) said he thought it a shame that a respectable man like Crawford was sent to prison for treatment, fie was violent, but required nothing more than ordinary medical treatment. He did nr,t blame the police, but the system of sending people to gaol for medical treatment. Medical evidence wag to the effoct that death was caused by pneu monia and complications. The constable who arrested Crawford atated that Crawford was very violent when arrested, and it took three men to hold him to prevent him from injuring himself. >; The jury returned a verdict according to the medical evidence, with a rider expressing a decided opinion that Crawford should not have been remanded to gaol. They were satisfied that everything possible was done for him there, but the facilities for treatment were not snob as the case demanded.
