AN OLD MAN'S PECULIAR CONDUCT. TWO MEN FIRED AT. ONE WOUNDED. By Telegraph—-Press Association WHANGAKEr, Ootober 29.
While making for a bank in tbe Wbangarei river, yesterday afternoon, two residents, named Wilkinson and Flushes, were startled by the report from a revolver and the impact of a bullet striking a mangrove tree within a few feet of their position. Looking back they saw an old man on the other side of the river, wbiob is narrow at this plaoe, levelling a revolver apparently at the boat. Three shots wero after wards Bred in quiok succession, one hitting Wilklnsou in the thigb and ricoohetting off. Hughes flung himself into tbe bottom of the boat just in time to escape receiving this bullet in the head. When the police spoke to thd old man, from whom they took the weapon, the latter said he was merely praotising. Proceeding*! will probably ensue.
