AGAINST OVERWHELMING ODDS.
Fbr forfy-eigbfc hours seven Armenian women defended the hamlet of Zebium in the Caucausus against a band of twenty well-armed Tartars. The men of Zebium departed to help defend another Armenian settlement threatened by Tartars. Before they reached their destination the Tartars raised the siege and descended on what they believed to*be defenseless Zebium. Zebium stands on the brow of a steep bill, accessible only from one side. Oue of the women seeing theJl'artars in she valley beneath they swore to defend themselves to the lust, and if the defence failed to commit suicide. The Tartars attempted to scale the bill. The heroio women rolled a can of kerosene fitted with a fuse down the hill and set Ore to the vegitation. The Tartars, dazzled by the flames, attempted to retreat, but lost three men from riflle shots. At daybreak they scaled the bill almost to the summit, but were fired on from the windows of the houses and put to flight.
