THE NORTHERN APPROACH.
MATTEU AGAIN BEFORE TBB COUNCIL.
A letter from the Minister of Publio Works regarding the improvements of the northern approach, which was received at the meeting of the Borough Council on Tuesday evening, and which appeared in trie Wairarapa Age on Wednesday morning, was considered at tbe adjourned meeting of the Counoil last evening. The Mayor said he thought that the Eon. Hall-Jones was labouring under a misapprehension in the nutter. One of the bridges was out of the borough, and the other was half in and half out of the borough. He thought the Minister did not understand the position, and oonsidered that a letter should be written to him explaining all the circumstances of the oase. The Minister, said tbe Mayor, had power to force tbe County Council's hands in tbe matter. Cr Ewingtcn said he oonsidered that the Minister clearly understood tbe situation. He thought tbe Counoil should follow out the Minister's suggestion, and instruct the Engineer to prepare plans, estimates and specifications. Cr Eton thought that the Counoil should bejjcareful bow?Mr HallJones 1 letter was replied to. The Council might be led into spending some thousands of pounds, Cr Morris moved that the matter stand over until tbe meeting next Tuesday night. Cr Ewington seconded the motion. Cr Temple said there was a committee already appointed to deal with the northern approach, and he suggested that tbe letter should be referred to that committee for a report. Cr Eton moved as an amehd meat, and Cr Pauling seconded, that the letter be referred to the Committee already appointed.,, On a division being taken the amendment, was lost on tbe casting vote of the Mayor, and the motion was oarried..
