BIDEFORD.

At the beginning of the winter the ladies of the difitrict deoided to hold a series of socials daring the season for the purpose of raising fands to build a sapper room on to the looal hall. They have all been a success, but the last one, which was a plain and fanoy dress ball, eaoily constituted a record for the past season at least. Favoured with beautiful weather, visitors from miles around took the opportunity of assisting ai so worthy a function, for there muse have teen over seventy people present, including the non-dancers. tf he energetio secretary, ably assisted by her committee, had everything so arranged that it would be impossible for anyone not to enjoy* themselves. Mr Fr|d. Miller is to be commended for gratuitously supplying the music, thus keeping dowa the expense. Mr •Jarswill, as representative of the Trustees of toe Hall, in a short speech, announced the takings, which amounted to £7 10s. -He also thanked the ladies for their ,work, and promised that the supper room would be ready for them next winter. Several songs and reoitations were rendered during the even ing by Messrs H. Lang, fl. Miller, and J. Palloon. Mr Ohuroboase, assisted by Mr H. Miller, officiated as M.O. The following were in fanoy dress costumes:— Miss Bulck (Old English Maiden), Mrs Bennett (Summer), Miss G. Miller (Nurse), Miss Look (Ohertyiipe), Miss, Scott (Nighti, Mrs Oburohouse (University Student), Miss MoGovein (Waiting Maid of Napoleon's Court), Miss Johnson (Spring), Mrs Oarswill (Undergraduate), Miss Killery (Frost), Mr H. Miller (Mikado), Mr Bennett (Cricketer), Mr S. MoGovern, (Butler), Mr D. MoGovern (Policeman), Mr ChurohousefOlown), Mr Falloon (Clown), Mr J. Carswili (Nigger), Mr MoGovern (Swagger).
