PUBLICAN'S BOOTH AT THE PARK.

MR J. CROSS' MOTION

REJECTED,

At the annual meeting of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society, on Saturday, Mr J. Cross moved iu accordance with his -301108 of motion, "That a vote be .taken A at the annual meeting on the advisableness of continuing the publican's booth on the Park Oval on the occasion of the Society's sports gathering on New Year's Day." Speaking to his motion Mr Grose snid that aa the Sooiety had. a membership of about 150, and only about 30 wore presout he did not wish the vote to be taken at the meeting, but instead that eaoh member be supplied with a ballot paper and allowed to vote. He thought this course was enly fair to those members who were not preseat. The Chairman (Mr .1. B. McKeu zie) stated that the wording of the notice of rcotion was that thj vote be taken at the annual meeting, and tha,t being bo he must rule that the vote be taken at the meeting. Every member had received a copy of the notice of motion, and it was their own fault if they did not attend the meeting and vote. Mr T. Duncan seconded the motion pro forma, in order, he eaid, to allow it to be discussed. He said he was strongly opposed to the motion, and always would be. He contended that Mr Cross had set forth no argumeuta iu favour of his motion, and be hoped that the members preseut would reject it. Mr Cross had said that tho Wnirarßra Caledonian Sooiety was the only Caledonian Society in New Zealand tbnt allowed a publican's booth at tho sports gatherings, and in order to test the veracity of that/ statement, he had written to various Caledonian Sooieties in the colony enquiring it they allowed a publican's booth it their sports gatherings. He had found that there were several of the Sooieties in New Zealand that always bad a publican's booth at their gatherings. "Mr Cross objected to a publican's booth being on the Park Oval," said Mr Duucan, "yet he did not see any reason why the publican's booth should not be on the showgrounds. I consider that inconsistent."

Messrs J. 11. Pauling, J. C. McKillop and W. L. Falconer, spoke against tbe motion. Mr D. Guild said he was not pre pared to vote for the motion at present, lie wouH, however, like to Gee the use of the publican's booth nt the sports yatberinga modified 5u some way.

Mr Crosa said that as be could not obtain a vote of all tho mem bera on the motion, lie would ask leave" to withdraw the motion.

Mr Duncan, as the seconder of the motion, objected to that course being taken, and said be would like to have tto matter settled there and then.

The motion was" then put meeting and declared by the Chairman "to bo lost unanimously."
