PAPAKAIO MURDER.

A MAN DETAINED. By Telegraph—Press Association OAMAKU, October 10. The police have detained a man named J. D. Pindlay in connection with the Papakaio murder case. The police will give no information on the subject, but tha man is known to have been about the neighbourhood for some time before and after the murder of Ronnie. Ho told some people tbat he was a baker, and others that he was a cook who ran away from the steamec Port Stephens when she was in port. As a matter of fact, the man detained came from the South and made application to the Canterbury Land Board for a section of land. The police records show that he has served sentences for housebreaking, etc., but the fact that he baa only been detained and not arrested may mean that the police h»ve nothing muoh to go on. ; As they are very reticent, nothing <jan be gathered that is not mererumour. In referring to the Papakaio tragedy, the Oamaru Mail states that the police lay claim to a theory in the matter, and make no secret of the fact that the only man w&om they have reason to suspect is now a considerable distance from tha scene of the crime. The alleged strange sailer' who was seen in the vicinity of Papakaio and who appeared to pay no inconsiderable attention to the dwelling in which the deed was perpterated, hat? not yet been located. It is stated that at six o'clock on Thursday morning a resident of Papakaio living on the road was startled by the sound of an approaching bicycle. The cyclist was going at a rapid rate, with his head dowo, but, seeiug this person, glanced over, giving a good view of his features. The police, who were afterwards examining the roal for bicycle tracks, were informed of. this, and it is understood they despatched two constables on the track.
