Macdonald moved » that a bust of each Premier of the t colony should be placed in a prominent position within the walla of Parliament, and tliat it is desirable : to exhibit at the International Exhibition portraits, busts and photo- ■ eaoh of the Premiers who 1 have held office snoe the introduction of responsible Government i» 1856. The Hon. J. Kigg said he was absolutely astounded that a proposition should be made involving the colony in tne expense of procuring busts of our public men thut should be left for their admirers. The Attorney-General could not 880 his way to vote for the motion, and suggested that the mover should withdraw it and bring it forwaid in some other form. The Hou. J. E. Jenkinson moved the previous question which, being carried, olosed the disoussion. The Attorney-Genei'Rl moved tho second reading of the Motor Regulation Hill, No. 2. The second reading was agreed to. On tha motion to go into Committeo on the Fire Brigades Bill, the Hon. H. P. Wigram moved that the Bill be referred to a Select Committee. The Attorney General strongly opposed the amendment. The amendment was lost by 13 votes to 6, and the Bill was committed. At Clause 2 ("interpretation"), the Hon. Mr Jenkinson moved an amendment, which would make the Bill apply to the whole colony. The amendment was negatived. The clause was passed, and progress was reported. - The Council adjourned at 4.55 o'clock. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. The House met at 2.30 p.m. The Sea Fisheries Bill, Greytown Gasworks Bill and Greytown Trustees \Empoweri'ng Bill, were road a firstJtime. Tne Hon. T. Y. Duncan brought up a report of the Waste Lands Committee which was simply to the effect that the nroceedings of the Committee continue to be made public contrary to the Standing Orders. The Premier thought the report ought to be referred back to the Committee for a suggestion. Mr Massey did not agree with the Premier, but thought the House ought to act either by enforcing the Standing Orders or opening the Committee to the Press. The report was ordered to lie on the table. On the motion of the Premier, the Oivil Service Superannuation Bill was read a second time pr.o forma and referred to the Public Accounts Committee. The Maori Land Claims Adjustment and Laws Amendment Bill was considered and read a third time and passed. The Natives Bill was passed through committee. The House adjourned for dinner* at 5.30 o'clock. EVENING SITTING. The House resumed at 7.20 o'olock. Progress was made with the Government Advances to Settlers Bill in Committee. Clause 48 was 1 amended by a few formal words. After the remaining clauses bad passed unaltered Mr Massey moved the following new clause:—'"When, a loan is required for the erection of buildings ou urban or suburban lands, whioh is not subject to any other encumbrance, then a sum not exceeding £4OO ou the whole or fourfifths of the falue of the land may, at the discretion of the board, be advanced by instalments 89 the ereotion of buildings proceeds." Mr Massey explained that the clause was devised to assist the erection of workmen's homes. The Premier could not accept the new clause. The new clause was defeated by 48 votes to 13, and the schedules were passed unaltered. Mr Massey thought the passiug of ! the Tourists and Health Resorts Control Bill violated the agreement a3 to the supper adjournment. He must ask the Chairman to rule that Mie Bill be discharged from the Order Paper. The Chairman, after having heard the Premier, decided that the Bill cannot be proceeded with. Progress was reported, and the House adjourned at 11.35 p.m
