THE ACCIDENT TO THE SCOTCH EXPRESS.
NIKE PASSENGERS KILLED. PITEOUS SCENES. Received September 21, 8.33 a.m. LONDON, September 20. Four coaches were derailed, nine passengers being killed and twenty injured. The coaches "ere reduced to matchwood, and blazed furiously. Piteous sceneß were witnepsed, owing to inability to render effective aid.
TWELVE DEATHS. FORTY MAIL BAGS BURNED. Reoeived September 21, 9 p.m. LONDON, September 21. Twelve people were killed in the railway accident, including Mr Philipsnn, Director of the NorthEastern Railway. Sixteen were injured,* eight severely. ' All the signals were against the train, whnh/an through the points, there being* a sharp curve. The train was derailed in a similar manner to the train at Salisbury a few
months ago. Forty mail bags were burned. The brakes were perfeot, and it is supposed that the connecting rod was broken when approaohing Qrautbam or that the driver forgot to stop. The wreckage was ablaze for two hours.
COMMENT BY THE TIMES. Reoeived September 21, 11 p.m. LONDON, September 21. The Times says that it was the fireman's duty when the engines changed at Peterborough to see that the vacuum] brake was attached to the engine* befcre re-starting. If tbat had been neglected the apparent inability to stop at Grantham was easily explained.
