MARTON, September 5. The meeting ot the Marton Jockey Club opened to-day, in fine weather. The attendance of the public was large, 'lhe course was iu good order, though a trifle "holding." The sum of £G,334 was put through tho total isal or during the day. The racing on the whole was good. Mr G. F. Bishop, the secretary, assisted by energetic stewards, bad all the arrangements for tho meeting complete, 'lhe following were the results:— SHORTS HANDICAP, 5 furlongs. J. Tumor's Gleam ... ... 1 W. A good start. General Peel lod for a mile. Bonheur, who was lying handy, led at the last hurdle, even taally winning easily. Time, 3min Bsec. Dividends, £5 10s and £2 4s. MAIDEN HANDICAP. Helen Portland 1 Satis 2 Paul 3 Scratched—Strolleu, Appellee, St. Killian. Hydrosoope led from a fair start, and was joined by Satis after a furlong had been covered. Helen Portland shot through on entering the straight, and woa easily, by several lengths. The field were strung out at the finish. Time, lmin 37se:s. Dividends, £2 17a and £1 18a. HUNT UUP, about 2% miles. M. Symans' Brenda 1 H. J. Cameron's Senorita ... 2 H. Connop's Rangitoto 3 Scratched—Blanco. Matatara fell, and J. Boyd, the rider, fractured his collar-bone. This was a good raoe. Brenda won by nearly three lengths. Time, 6min 17seo. Dividends, £3 3s and £3 3s. PLYING HANDICAP, 6 furlongs. A. Wilson's Splendid Idea ... I M. Moore's Te Kainui ... 2 S. W. Tatham's Houyhnbnm ... 3 Scratched—Mataari, Moloch, Kai ErriD, Rosegrove, Miss Adeline, Pat, and Tiraumea. Splendid Idea and Te Kainui were the first to show out. After a lurlong had been covered, Splendid Idea was a length in front, and, oomiDg on, won very easily. The second horse was two lengths away. Time, lmin 20aeo. Dividends, £5 3s and £7 9s.

CROFTQN HANDICAP,, about 1 n«ile. John Farmer's Gleam 1 E. Russell's Waikato 2 S. Pitt's Eustique ... ... 3 Soratohed-—Ngatarua, Truce and Pushful. From a beautiful start Waikato showed to the front, and led half-way downjthe straight, where Gleam, coming fmm tbe ruck, joined Waikato. A good finish resulted lu Gleam winning by half a neck, Eustique three lengths' away third. The rest were strung out. Time, lmin s(Jsec. Dividends, £4 14s' and 18s. HANDICAP HURDLES, \% mile. A. Attwood's Capulet 1 J. Wesley's Asteroid 2 H. H. Pharazyo's Oryx 3 Scratched— Matariki. This raoe brought out a good field. >' Asteroid was favourite. Capulet led throughout, and, jumping well, won in good style by two lengths. Asteroid pat in a good run, but could not overhaul tbe leader.. Oryx was six j lengths away third. Time, 3min 7seo. TUKF NOTES. I (By Zetland). THE HUNT OLUB MEETING. The Wairarapa Hunt Club meeting, to be held on the Taratahi course, to-day, will be largely attended, as considerable interest is being evinced iu the gathering. The officials of the club are enthusiastic in the matter of success being assured, and, from a sporting point of view, a very enjoyahle afternoon's raoing should result. Good fields will be seen out in nearly every event. Bookmakers will be licensed to bet fit a fee of £5 5a each, and a fair volume of business will be dealt with, as the various events are decidedly of an open character as regards the selection of probable winners. The first event is set down for 12.30 p.m. The following may run the most forward in their engagements:— Hunters' llurdles—Kiug Bay and Stargazer. Hack L'lat- War Dog and St. Brandon. Taratahi Steeplechase—Merry legs and General. Hack Flat Lavinia and Star Queen, WairarapiiSteeplechaeu—Remnetto and Yeoman. Ladies' Bracelet Thresa and Tattoo. Hunters' Plat—Black Oil and Kemnette.

A number of horses were worked at th 9 Opaki course, yesterday morning, on the new plough gallop, j which was iu good order considering Jihe rain that fell on Sunday and | Monday. The new grubber ordered I a few days ago has already proved the right thing for the work required of it. Within a few days the plough gallop will be most satisfactory to traibere, and now that training facilities are improved, the Masterton horses may be depended upon to score at least a fair percentage of wins this season. R. Knox's team was out before breakfast. The various members of the stable are looking well. Those worked after breakast were Dick Turpin, Lissa, Torpedo fills, Fraser, Thera, Stargazer, Wild Cat, Sootah Reel, Taleteller, Sun bonnet, Master Agnes gelding, Lady Pet, aud Officer gelding. Saracen has been purchased by Mr Walter Tully, of Greytown, and will therefore remain in this district. Chief Coramaude', by Vcltigeur —Miaobief, was sold by auction at Martinborougb on Tuesday for 35 guineas,
