GAUMONT CHRONOPHONE.

Speaking of theStonham-Morriaon Company's opening performance in New Plymouth the Taranaki News says:—Thisi is an inventive age; no sooner is one scientific surprise effected than it giv«s way to another. Ever on the look-out for "something new," it was not at all surprising that a very large audience assembled at the Theatre Royal last night to witness the, opening performance of the chronophone. This wonderful pleoe ,of mechanism produces what is termed in theatrical parlance "articulating piaturea." The pictures are the ordinary moving ones, which have so long been the vogue, but they aspire to greater realism, and sing, Jaugh, whistle and talk, in a way that if one paused to think of it, must impress one with the scientific and mecbanioai exactitude of the artificial means resorted to. The novelty and realism of the combination is such, however, that, artificiality is forgotten, and the audience finds itself dwelling on the moving lips of the figures on the screen almost forgetting that living actors are not catering for its entertainment. The Company ebow in this town on Thursday and Friday, August -23 rd and 24th. The box plan is now open at Miss Rive's. j
