WOOL AND HIDES SALE.

Ihe astonishing growth of the •< Taranaki wool, sheepskins, nides and tallow sales is shown in Mr Newton King s report of the last Bale, held at Stratford last week. Three months ago sales of this kind were unknown in Taranaki, and many valuable hides, calf skins and Bhewpskins were allowed to go to waste for want of a local market where they could be oouverted into ready money or else heavy freights were incurred in sending them away. Mr King, with characteristic foresight and enterprise, decided to institute sales. The success of the undertaking depended on getting outside buyers to attend in order that fall value oould be realized by full competition. This was possible cnly by submitting a large catalogue from whiob buyers oould secure a nonsigDment sufficient to warrant expending of time and money in attending the sales. The support accorded the sales must be very gratifying to Mr] King and that this support was warranted there can be no doubt. On Tuesday the attendance of busers and the spirited bidding would have done credit ' to any town in the colony and the catalogue of 2030 hides, 1300 sheepskins, and other lots of wool . and tallow was striking proof of the importance of Taranaki as a stock raising district.
