STOPPING OF PRIZE FJUHTH.
Received August 8, 10.23 a.m. MELBOURNE, August 8. Mr Bent, the State Premier,£replying to a question, stated that if the present law was ineffective to stop prize-fights bo would introduce, a Bill to accomplish that object.
PENNY POSTAGE. Received August 8, 10.19 a.m. MELBOURNE, August 8. A debate is proceeding in the' Federal House of Representatives on the Budget proposals. Mr Watson objected to trie Commonwealth throwing away £300,000 annually in introducing penny postage. Mesßrs Cook aud Wales doubted? whether the Postmaster-Goueral had any right to deprive the States of a part of their surplus for the purpose. THE DEPORTATION OF KANAKAS. Received August 8, 10.30 a.m. MELBOURNE, August 8. * The Federal Government i 8 calling for tenders for the deportatiou of kanakas next month. The Government undertakes full responsibility in the matter. The Queensland Government has promised cordial co-operation in the work. It is estimated that conveyance will have to be provided foi 2,500 kanakas. (In his Budget speech delivered last week, the Federal Treasurer stated:—"The repatriation of kanakas has to take place immediately, and we all hope the greatest care will be exercised iu carrying it out. The Government proposes to provide £25,000 for the purpose. The Queensland Commission estimates the cost at £53,454, and states that 5,280 are liable to be returned, but that not more than 4,500 will be deported. 01 that number hot more than' 900 will be deported at the end of the year. The remainder will be deported as soon as possible afterwards. This is part of the White Australia policy, which must bo persevered with.") PUBLIC SERVICE APPEAL BOARD. AN EASTERLY GALE. # Received August 9, 1.3 a.m. SYDNEY, August 8. A heavy easterly gale is raging at Norfolk Island. Heavy seas are rolling in. A timber vessel which arrived from New Zealand to-aay, reports a protracted passage, due to a long succession of westerly and southerly gales. AN INVITATION TO THE ENGLISH CRICKET TEAM.
