The [:ttiree year-old imported colt Charmer was sold for £I,OOO. The stallion Casablanca was bought by Mr J. H. Mitchell, of New Zealand. ABOLITION OF CANTEENS. Received August 3, 11.35 a.m. MELBOURNE, August 3. In the Federal Senate a petition was presented against the abolition of canteens. Tne debate on the Bill has been adjoruned for a fortnight. THE LANDS SCANDAL. SYDNEY, August 3. The bearing of the Oriok-Willia uaaejbas further been adjourned till Thursday. RIVER STEAMER BURNED. A WHARF DESTROYED BY FIRE. • Received August 3, 11 p.m. SVDNEY, August 3. The river steamer Cooreel waa burned, and sank at Clareuoe Town. The fire spread to a wharf, which, with two sheds, was destroyed. The damage is estimated at £5,000. (Clarence Town is 114 miles N.E. from Sydney). POLITIC 3. Reoeived August 3, 10.55 p.m. MELBOURNE, August 3. In the House of Representatives the Penny Postage Bill was read for the first time. The Bounties Biil was read a second time. The Minister of Defence has tabled a memorandum dealing with the disposal of the Defence Estimates whioh total £6b9,000, being an increase of £49,000 as compared with last year. HOME RULE. Reoeived August 4, 1,15 a.m. SYDNEY, August 3. Tbe Irish Home Rule Envoys addressed a crowded and enthusiastic meeting at,the Town Hall, to-night. Resolutions in favour of Home Rule were adopted. VErERANS ROWING RACE. Received August 4, 12.24 a.m. SYDNEY, August 3. , The veterans will row in their old days' colours. Riohard Green, who ;ia 70 years of age, starts on scratoh; the others from 35 to 60 seconds behind scratoh. McLean, Kemp, and Beach, are tbe limit men. Additional interest is added to tomorrow's proceedings by a race for ladies for the double championship.
