THE MASTERTON ABATTOIR.

ADDITIONAL PEN ACCOMMODATION REQUIRED.

The Manager of the Mastertou Abattoir wrote to the meeting of the Maaterton Borough Works Committee, last evening, with reference to improvements at the yards to prevent the braising of cattle. He stated that he found it very difficult to prevent the bruising of ioattie yarded at the abattoir for slaughter, and he had, ou account of the bruised condition of several carcases, reoeived complaints from aome of the butchers. When animals were thus bruised it affeoted the keeping properties of the carcase, and entailed a pecuniary loss to the butcher. So long as horned cattle were yarded two in a pen, the bruising would continue. There were at present eight pens at the abattoir, and som« days there were as many as fifteen cattle to kill. Six other pens •could be made inside the large yard, and still leave plenty of room for the yarding of stock. He suggested that six more pens should be provided. Three more water troughs would also bt> required. He further suggested that a fenoe should be run across the base of the triangle uaed for yarding cattle, so that drafting could be done on horseback. The concrete yard was not suitable for Bbch work. In connection with the same matter a letter was received from Mr A. Stempa, butcher, stating that the yards at the abattoir wire neither sufficient nor suitable. He had been oompelled to put three or four cattle in one pen, with the result that they got badly bruised. The drafting yard with the conorete floor was too large, and be suggested that half of it could be converted into pena. He thought that the matter could be very well remedied with little expense if it w3re left in the hands of the butchers and Abattoir Manager. The whole matter was referred to the Engineer to deal with.
