INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
REPORT OF THE INSPECTOR OF NUISANCES.
The report of the Inspector of Nnisdnces (Mr W. E. Cullen), submitted tu the meeting of the Masterton Borough Works Committee, last evening, dealt ohiefly with the oases of infections diseases in the Borough. Be stated that there were snow eighteen oases of infeqtioua diseases in the Boroagh, sixteen of which were scarlet fever and two diphtheria. The cases were of a very mild form, and the patients were progressing favourably towards recovery. Every care was being taken to prevent the spread of the diseases by isolating the patients and those who had come in contact with tbem, and by disinfecting the premises in which cases had occurred, and generally by most strintly carrying out the infractions of the Health Officer. If the epidemic of scarlet fever continued, the Inspector urged the necessity of the Council considering the purchase of aa ambulanoe waggon 0* some other means for convey" ing patients to the fever hospital. He had had very great difficulty and lost much time during the past week in obtaining convey&noea. Cabmen were naturally very reluctant to allow their vehicles to be used for that purpose,, and there waa no other means of conveyance available. The Mayor stated that the number of outbreaks of infeotioua diseases shewed the necessity of all premises, espeoially stables, being connected with the drainage. The Uounoil should see that this was done. Or Ewington oontended that it was neoessary to procure an ambulance waggon, and on his motion, it was decided to ask the Wairarapa District Hospital Board to provide an ambulanoe waggon for the Borough The Town Clerk stated that the Hope Street Fever Hospital was now full, and there wi,s no other place, in which to accommodate patients. In connection with the outbreak of soarlet fever at Ah Lop's shop, he sa«d that the Health Officer had destroyed the fruit in the shop, and the bill, amounting to £l4, would be sent into the Council. He had read the Act, and considered that the Council was not liable fur the destruction of shop goods. He , added, however, that the Wellington City Couuoil bad recognised its liability in this connection, and bad met it. The Mayor stated that the matter would be considered when the bill was receiver* by the Council.
