ELEMENTARY CHEMISTRY.

LECTURE BY MR DAVJS. Mr W. C. Davie, instructor in agriculture, had an attendance of 40 teaohers at his clas3 in the Masterton District High School, ou Saturday. His lecture and demonstrations dealt with elementary chemistry, beginning with the technical subject of measurements, after which the difference between physioal and chemical solutions, the effeots of heat and evaporation, and the separation, extraction, and production of mineral and other gases were very fully explained. Mr Davis has a very happy style, and great interest appeared to be exoited in the infor* mation he imparted, the teachers taking copious notes. At the conclusion of his demonstrations, extending considerably over an hour, he Invited those present who were in any difficulty to question him on the subjects be had been dealing with, a privilege that was taken advantage of by one or two lady teachers. Inspector Fleming, who happened to be present, took advantage of the occasion to address the teachers aJ some length on the subject of eohool methods and examinations. The teachers, wbu were fortunate enough to be in attendance, received a fund of valuable information.
