DEPARTMENT OF LABOUR.
MONTHLY REPORT. The monthly report of the Department of labour contains the following concerning Masterton: — Building trades: There la a fall-ing-off in the number of buildings in course of erection, but it is considered to be only temporary. Oar | penters and joiners are not very busy. Bricklayers fairly busy. Painters and deooratorß fully employed. Plumbers busy. Engineering trades: Fairly busy with repairs. Tailoring trade: Reports vary. It may safely be said that the business is quite up to the usual season's average. There is more competition in this trade at present than formerly. Dressmaking: Fairly good. Local hands have been working full time. Saddle and harness - making: Steady business has been done during the month. «g Ooaohbuilding: Satisfactory. Local tradesmen fully employed. Bnokmaking: Fair. Furniture trades: Satisfactory. Full time has been worked in looal factories. r>'^£ Retail trade (general: The retail busines oontinues quite up to the average, v? Some trades report a substantial ' increase in the volume of trade as compared with the corresponding month of last year. Unskilled labour Work has not been very plentiful for this class of worker. There have been a number of men looking for employment, most of whom are strangers to this district. Tenal.—Building trades: All looal carpenters have been fully employed and others from adjoining dstriots, daring the month repairing and putting a Editions to iwellingboases, and repairing and erecting woolfihflds Retail trade: A fairly good business has been done in all branches daring the month. Miscellaneous: Blacksmiths and saddlers have been doing a fair busM ness daring the month, but trade baa j not increased sufficiently to put on extra hands Unskilled labour: All looal men have been fairly employed daring the month at scrub-cutting, draining, fencing and at roadwork, bat the wet weather has prevented them getting in full time. Several swaggers were seen on the road during the month; most of them got employment at sorub-oatting on Terns! Station, others who were inoapable of doing scrub-cutting kept on in search of lighter employment.
