THE WESTLAND ELECTION.

MR SEDDON RETURNED.

HOKTTIKA, July 13.

The following is the result of the Poll taken to-day for tbe Westland seat in the House of Representatives:—-

T. Y. SBDDON ... 2,281 H. L. MICBEL ... 1,634

Majority for Mr Seddon, 647.

Seven small returns have yet to come to hand, but they cannot effect the result. Botb candidates addressed a large assemblage in front of the Supreme Court, where the returns were being sbown by limelight, Mr Seddon expressed (his grateful thanks for the support accorded to him, and expressed pleasure at the manner in which the contest had been [conducted. Mr Seddon concluded his speeoh by calling for three cheers for his opponent. Mr Miobel thanked his supporters, and announced his intention of contesting the seat again on the first opportunity, when he felt sure that long service would be first and sympathy second. Both candidates were oheered loudly, and carried shoulder high. The waiting crowds were amused by an exhibition of pictures, including a number of local caricatures, while parodies on "Tommy Atkins" and "Sons of the Sea'* did service for musical honours. Mr Seddon will remain on the Coast same little time, and visit the locality <vhere he had been unable to visit during bis campaign. He is receiving a large number of congratulatory messages.
