MEMORIAL TO THE LATE PREMIER.

WELLINGTON, July 11. A publb meeting, convened by the Mayor of Wellington, was held this evening, to aonsider the question of a memorial to the late Right Uou. Mr Seddon. The meeting was thoroughly representative ia character. The Mayor, in opening the proceedings, Baid those who had differed from the" Inte Premier politically would join with otbors in seeing that a fitting memorial to him was erected. Thetftn. T. K. McDonald, M.L.C., then moved—"That a national memorial bo established to percetuata. the memory of Richard John Seddon and that the Mayor and Chairmen of all the local bodies throughout the colony £be invited to join tho movement." There might, bb said, be a divergence of opinion as to the form"whioh the memorial should take, but an opportunity would bo given by the proposed organisation of a national Committee in tho city of Wellington for everyone's viewjs to be considered. TlißCommitf.ee, after considering all tho proposals, would submit; to the people ol'gthe colony a scheme for a memorial and subscriptions. Porsoually ho looked upon the proposed scholarship as being very noble. The cost of a statue in the Parliameutarj[j>rounds. should be borne by the State. No doubt the colony would for the. greater memorial willingly subscribe up to one hundred thousand pounds.. The motion was seconded byDr W. E. Co'.lins, supported by other speakers, and carried unanimously. A committee was set up, with power to add to their number. All the Mayors an! Chairmen of locaL bodies are to bo members. An Executive was also appointed.
