SLAUGHTERING AND INSPECTION ACT.

TRAFFIC IN CALVES. f ßy Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 9. Ah the Police Court, ,to-day, Harrj Wilsou, slaughterman at Alt. Roebill, was charged with dressing for sale a calf weighing less than 601b. Joseph Pasooe was charged with unlawfully proouring W ilaon to dress a oalf, sold to a butcher named William Morrow, which, when weighed in the shop by the police, was found to te only 421b. The charges were brought under the Slaughtering and Inspection Act. The regulation, while requiring the dressed weight to be not less than 601b, did not interpret the words "dressed weight." It was contended for the defence that "dressed weight" included the head, feet, skin and flux. The oalf was admittedly one day old. Owing to the oonflict of testimony as to the probable weight of the parts mentioned and the absence of an interpretation of the words "dressed weight," the magistrate dismissed the oase. William Morrow was charged with exposing for sale a oalf not slaughtered in accordance with the provision of the Act. William Clark was charged with selling to Morrow this calf, and also with having slaughtered it at a place not registered under the Aot. This calf was over weight. The stock inspector stated that there was a large traffla in oalves going on, and undoubtedly rery many uoder-welghfc oalves were being sold tQ restaurants, Chinese, and so on, but it was vary diffloult to oatoh \the offenders. Ihere was also a large trade in pigs slaughtered in unlioehged places. In bis opinion stringent measures would have to be taken to prevent the sale of under.weight calves. The Magistrate fined Morrow £1 and coats, and Clark 10s and oosts. lie stated that heavy penalties would be inflicted in lutuve for suon offences.,
