STATEMENT BY MR HERBERT GLADSTONE. Reoeived June 27, 8.30 a.m. LONDON, June 26. Mr Herbert Gladstone, Secretary of State for Home Affairs, stated in the House of Commons that the sentence passed on Mrs* Billington, who was fined for assaulting a policeman, was a reasonable one, but in response to Mr Asquitb's appeal for leniency, he, with the Magistrate's concurrence, had reduced the fine and term of imprisonment to one-half.
