Mann, in supporting a Pure Food Bill, drew attention to the adulteration of pepper, clive oil and other articles. . He alleged that bottled cherries were picked green, and the colour removed with acid. They were then dyed a bright red with analine dye. A sample of dye taken from a bottle of cherries dyed a pieoe of doth scarlet. The contents of a bottle labelled "Pure Honey" was found to be entirely composed of glucose. The bottle contained a dead bee in order to deaeire the public. Patent medioines were shown containing opium and cocaine, and he deolared these to be largely responsible for the alarming increase in opium'and couaine habits.
