BOROUGH WORKS.
KEPO&T BY THE ENGINEER. The Borough Engineer reported to the meeting of the Boroagh Works Committee last evening as follows: •—"During the past four weeks the staff have been engaged ib cleaning gutters, making culverts, eto. As the water tables throughout the borough are mb;tly choked with grass and weeds, it has Been necessary to employ extra labour for oleaning them out. A certain amount of grading has been done, and the spoil therefrom ca,rted off, : in some oases by private persons, in others b.r the staff. The material is «itber irnd in reclaiming low places 01 is sold to private persons. Muoh more grading still remains to be done. The wages list for the month included the following items:— Maintenance, £76 13s; scavenging, £l9 13s Id; Park flO 18s 6d; Cole Estate Boads, £3 16s 3d; street lighting, £8; Makora Greek, £lB 16g Bd. The number of hands on the latter work has been increased to six with a view to getting through the work \ quicker.' The work ,in connection with the Waipbua stop bank is in progress, and it should be decided,at once If this is to beoome a river promenade. If it is, the. owner's fenoes must be put up accordingly. I have at-', ranged with the Chairman of the Trust, Lands Trust for the'setting baok of toe fence at the corner of Dixon Street and Park Avenue to allow of a wiier aoproaoh to the Park. , I am in receipt of ad. offer from Messrs Gadsby and Bartlett to level the piece of ground west of the practice ground for the sum of £B, or they will do the work on wages." Plans were submitted for the new oulvesta .over the Makora Creek it Queen Street and Chapel Street, the cost.of which wasestimated at £IOO, Tfiis cost was for conorete, and the cost could be reduced by building the culverts in wood. It was decided to visit the Mako:a Stream in order to determine on the exaot locality for a culvert over the stream near Mr O'Leary'a shop. Alternate tenders for the erection of two concrete cnlverts with either wood oi? concrete decks are theu to be called. The offer of Messrs Gadsby and Bartlett to level the piece of ground west of the practice ground for the sum of £8 was accepted.. The. question of the Biver promenade was held over until after the Council bad visited the locality. . The report was adopted.
