THE BOROUGH ABATTOIR.
AN INCREASE IN THE STAFF RECOMMENDED.
"After a fortnight's trial at the abattoir 1 find that the daily work required to be done is too muoh for tbe present staff (two men and a boy). The Inad butcher, besides killing, has to attend to the engine and water supply, give delivery of goods, when 1 oannot attend to it, supervise the slaughtering, and see that eaoh butohei's offal, fat, meat, skins, and bides are distinctly marked and kept separate." "fhus ran tbe report presented by the manager or the abattoir to the Masterton Borough Works Committee last evening. Tbe report showed that the stock dealt with for the week ended 15th iost, was as follows:—41 cattle at 6s, £l2 6?; 6 calves at Is 9d, 10s 6d; 24 pigs at 2s 6d, £3; 212 sheep at Is 3d. £l3 sa; total, £29 Is 6d. The manager then submitted the following suggestions:—''! would suggest that a handy man be employed. He would bury diaeased carcases and offal, clean out tbe yards and drains outaide the building, and assist with killing when required. 1 believe auoh a man could be got for £2 5s per week. 1 may mention that last Friday the men worked till 6.30 p.m., and then 15 sheep and three cattle bad to be left over," E The question of procuring an extra man at the abattoir was left in the bands of the manager and tbe head' slaughterman, Various recommend? ations of the manager with regard to improving t)je plant were referred to tbe Abattoir Committee.
