The camp wes situated on the hill.

The Whites formed two sides of the square and Sibindi's men the other tigo sides.

A succession of rushing, daring attaoks and ruses were carried on from all sides.

A herd of cattle waa moved against one face of the square as a screen and to break the formation.

The point was, however, held by the mounted men, and a volley checked the onrush.

The whole of the British position was soon aurrounded.

Colonel Leuohars planted riflemen amidst Sibindi's forces, with the object of encouraging them. The enemy's rifle fire was good, but the casualties were insignificant, as the Britishers were lying on the ground and firing from behind their saddles.

OPERATIONS IN MPATU DISTRICT. DETERMINED STAND BY THE REBELS. Received May 31, 10.20 p.m. PIETERMARITZBURG, May 31. Colonel Vanderplank with the Zululand Mounted Rifles, and some of the Natal Carbineers and levies, under Lieutenants London and Sheepstone, carried out successful operations against the rebels in the Mpatu district. The rebels made a determined stand, charging twice, but the levies stabbed and shot 35 in the bush. The troops at Dundee have begun a general forward movement.
