MASTERTON ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY.

'l43e success which attended the first concert of the third season of the Mastortou Orchestral Society, held in the Town Hall, last evening, augurs well for the present season of the Sooiety. There was a large audience, and each itom of the cnrefully-seleofced programme was warmly applauded. The orchestra showed considerable improvement in their playing notably in the attacks and finishes. At the last raomeut, Mrs Mathieson and Miss Nilsson, who were tn sing at the concert were unable to appear. The Society wore, however, able to secure Mr Potter, of Melbourne, to fill the vacancy. Though suffering from a slight cold, he rendered "Evening Soug," and "Sing Me to Sleep," in an excellent manner and ho was vociferously applauded. In the latter song the violin obligato was very neatly taken by Mr JReihana Boyes. The beat items on the programme were "Barbiere de Seville" and "JRosaruunde," which were very creditably executed by thb orchestra. A flute and clarionet duet, "Lo! Hoar the Gentle Lark," by Messrs Barrett and Oandy, was a very good item. The orchestra played "The Amazon's March" well, while the playing of "Sizilietta" and the pretty "Lola," au Italienne serenade, were much appreciated. Mr Reihana Boyes' violin solo, "Legende," was an excellent item, and was received with prolonged applause. "The Queen of Hearts" waltzes, two Mexioan danoes "Rosea and Thorns," and "Midnight," and a descriptive German piece wore all creditably executed. The newly-imported tympani were used throughout the entertainment for the first time, and lent body to the 'musical items thereby effeotiug an improvement. Mr R. H. Rathbone wielded the conductor's baton in a oapable manner. The piano used in the entertainment was lent by Mr .Tames Oandy.
